Food products were analyzed to determine the levels of 99 pesticides, including 16 pesticides newly added to our previous analysis reported in 2006. Residual pesticides were extracted from food samples with acetone/n-hexane (2:3), followed by a cleanup procedure with the Envi-Carb/LC-NH2 or Envi-Carb/LC-PSA column. Analysis was performed by combining GC-FPD, GC-FTD, GC-ECD and GC/MS(SIM). Our method showed the recovery rates of 16 pesticides spiked into strawberries, spinach and corn at 0.1 µg/g ranged from 55.0 to 184.7%. This method is useful for screening various foods for residual pesticides.

A method for determining morphine and codeine in poppy seeds was developed using HPLC. Morphine and codeine were extracted with 75% methanol and refined with an Oasis MCX cartridge. The LC separation was performed on the CAPCELL PAK C18 UG120 column using 0.1 mol/L ammonium formate (pH 8.5) and acetonitrile as the mobile phase. Morphine and codeine were confirmed by LC/MS/MS. The average recovery rates of morphine and codeine from poppy seeds were 88% and 92%, respectively, with a variation coefficient of 3% and a quantification limit of 0.5 µg/g.

Ochratoxin A (OTA), ochratoxin B (OTB) and citrinin (CIT) in cereals were determinated simultaneously by liquid chromatography - electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS). The quantification limits of OTA, OTB and CIT in the samples were 0.07, 0.03 and 0.07 µg/kg, respectively. In 33 samples examined, OTA was detected in 6 samples at levels of 0.2 - 1.8 µg/kg, and CIT were detected in 2 samples at levels of 0.7 - 1.1 µg/kg. One sample was co-contaminted with OTA and CIT. Contents of OTA detected in cereals were less than the regulation level of EU (5 µg/kg).

28 [Information] Determination of Formaldehyde in Beer PDF
Hiroyuki MIYAKAWA, Kenji FUJINUMA, and Kunihiro KAMATA
A method for the determination of formaldehyde in commercial beers by GC/MS was developed. Formaldehyde in beers was derivatized by O-(2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorobenzyl)hydroxylamine, and the derivative was extracted in n-hexane by solvent extraction. Then, formaldehyde was determined by GC/MS, as formaldoxime. Satisfactory results were obtained using neutral polar CP-SIL 24CB capillary column and decafluorobiphenyl as an internal standard. The detection and quantitative limits were 0.009 µg/mL and 0.030 µg/mL, respectively. We examined 23 samples of beers using the proposed method. As a result, 0.032 µg/mL of formaldehyde was detected in one sample and the trace amount was detected in 7 samples. The amount of formaldehyde in beers detected in this study was much lower than the standard value of the tap water of Japan and WHO, suggesting that the formaldehyde in beer examined in this study doesn't any influence on the human health.

Pesticide residues in 57 samples of 22 species of domestic vegetables and fruits purchased in Tokyo between April 2006 and March 2007 were investigated. Twelve kinds of pesticides were detected at trace levels (0.005 - 0.01 ppm) to 0.39 ppm in 9 samples of 9 species of domestic vegetables (detection rate 22%). Flucythrinate exceeded the Japanese MRL (0.05 ppm), and phthalide also exceeded the uniform limit (0.01 ppm) in one sample of a specially cultivated variety of Komatsuna. Eighteen kinds of pesticides were detected at trace levels to 0.22 ppm in 11 samples of 7 species of domestic fruits (69%), but these were all below the Japanese MRLs or the uniform limit.

Their concentrations were between trace levels (tr. : 0.005 - 0.01 ppm) and 0.34 ppm. Residues of these pesticides were at the levels lower than Japanese maximum residue limits (MRLs) and the uniform limit.

Residues of organochlorine pesticides, five kinds of insecticides (BHC, Chlorfenapyr, DDT, Dicofol and Endosulfan), and four kinds of fungicides (Captan, Chlorothalonil, Iprodione and Procymidone) were detected in 20 species of 40 crops between trace levels (0.005 - 0.01 ppm) and 0.65 ppm. For N-methyl carbamate pesticides, one kind of insecticide (Carbaryl) was detected in two species of two crops at 0.01 ppm and 1.2 ppm. From the pyrethroid pesticide group, eight kinds of insecticides (Bifenthrin, Cyfluthrin, Cyhalothrin, Cypermethrin, Fenpropathrin, Fenvalerate, Flucythrinate and Permethrin) were detected in 11 species of 19 crops between trace levels and 0.64 ppm. In the others, four kinds of fungicides (Imazalil, o-Phenylphenol, Thiabendazole and Sulfur), one kinds of herbicides (2,4-D), one kind of insecticide synergist (Piperonyl butoxide), and one kind of plant growth regulator (Maleic hydrazide) were detected in 9 species of 37 crops between trace levels and 6.7 ppm. These were all below the Japanese MRLs or the uniform limit.
